Infertility in Men
Male factor causes one-third of infertility solely and as contributory in another one third with female causes. The testing for a male is done by semen analysis. Low sperm count is a common cause of infertility in men. With modern infertility treatments and procedures, even the tiniest number of sperm in the semen of the man can be collected. There are also cases in which the male ejaculate no sperm due to blocked tubes in the testicles or due to a genetic disorder that prevents the ejaculation of the sperm.
Such cases require a surgical sperm retrieval to enable intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to take place to enable conception through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Also if the couple decides to have children after the male partner has had a vasectomy in the past, surgical sperm retrieval is the only solution.
Causes?
Abnormalities of semen parameters causes infertility in men like low sperm count, slow-moving sperms or improperly shaped sperms. There may or may not be underlying causes to it like genetic disorder, medication effect, obesity, smoking or alcohol intake, and treatment would depend on it accordingly Some men would have absent sperms in semen (Azoospermia), this could be due to problems with the testicles in producing them or an obstruction in the duct channel system transporting them. Testicles can get damaged due to injury, surgery, viral infections in childhood, or when they are undescended. Sometimes the testicles may be normal but do not get hormonal signals from the brain to produce sperms. This can be dealt medically. Some men face problems of premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation in the bladder, preventing insemination in partners tract.
Lifestyle factors:
Fatty diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, drug abuse, stress adversely affect the chances of achieving pregnancy.
Stress- physical or mental decreases the sexual drive too.
Sexually Transmitted Disease: Women & her partner are both screened for it in the initial visit and treated, as it disturbs the ascend of sperms in the genital tract and affects semen quality as well.
Chemotherapy and radiotherapy adversely affect the egg reserve and sperm parameters irreversibly. For someone wanting pregnancy later, have the option of undergoing egg, sperm, embryo cryopreservation before undertaking treatment.
