Semen Analysis - Dr. Rhythm Gupta

Semen Analysis

Semen analysis more commonly known as a sperm count test helps analyze the health and viability of the male sperm released during ejaculation. For semen analysis, the semen sample is collected and is then analyzed for a number of sperms present, the shape or the sperm and the sperm motility. As sperm counts can vary on daily basis, the doctor may recommend 2 sample collections with a gap of at least 7 days between each collection. A semen analysis is done to test male infertility. It is usually recommended when the couples face problem while trying to conceive.

Before you go for a semen analysis test, your doctor will ask you to avoid ejaculation for at least 2 days before the test and to avoid any medications that may affect the hormones. It is also recommended to avoid alcohol before the semen analysis.

Once the semen sample is collected, it is investigated under a microscope to check the:

  • Sperm count
  • Sperm Motility
  • Morphology (the size and the shape of the sperm)
  • Volume of the semen
  • pH level of the semen to measure the acidity in your semen
  • Liquefaction time to measure how long it takes for the semen to become liquid.
  • Fructose Levels of the semen
