Assisted Reproductive Techniques

ART or Assisted Reproductive Techniques involve a spectrum of treatments available for infertile couples. These treatments could be as simple as IUI or Intrauterine Insemination to something as complex as ICSI used for couples suffering from infertility. These techniques help to achieve pregnancy with aided medical processes.

Here is a brief account of all the techniques for the better understanding of couples considering help on fertility.

IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

This is an easy and simple technique which involves taking husband’s semen sample, washing it, preparing it to concentrate the most motile sperms and placing them inside the wife’s uterus on the day of egg rupture. This approach increases the chances of pregnancy. It is found to be useful only in women with normal open tubes and normal or mildly affected semen parameters.

IVF – In Vitro Fertilization

This method of assisted reproduction involves obtaining number of eggs at one time and causing the process of fertilization in artificial lab conditions, in a dish. The dish is placed in the incubator for embryos to form and grow for 2-5 days. Of which 1-2 good embryos are selected to be placed in the womb for implantation. This technique strengthens the chances of pregnancy as only better embryos are chosen of the many formed for transfer into the womb of the female. Originally developed for women with blocked tubes this method is now widely used for women with endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, low egg reserve and unexplained infertility when other treatment methods have failed.

ICSI – Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

This is a highly sophisticated technique where one sperm is injected directly into one egg, primarily used when there is severely low number of sperms, to elevate the chances of fertilization. There are further modified techniques to obtain the healthiest sperm so that the chances of pregnancy can be better.  After this rest of the process is similar to IVF, placing the dish in incubator in lab for development and growth of the embryos. Thereafter choosing the best embryo for transfer.

Thus, several ART techniques that science has offered are being used for assisting infertile couples to gain pregnancy and start their family.
