IVF – In-vitro Fertilization

For the couples battling with infertility issues, in-vitro fertilization or IVF fertilization has appeared as a boon. With lack of proper awareness, many of them count it as the last option. However, the fact is it can be the very first and perhaps the most successful solution.

IVF Fertilization- THE TECHNOLOGY

In vitro fertilization or IVF Fertilization is the most regularly performed assisted reproductive technology. Ideally, it is a four-step process which includes ovulation induction, egg retrieval, fertilization in a lab, and followed by the embryo transfer to the mother’s uterus.

In simpler terms, is a process where high doses of hormones are given to a woman so that she produces numerous eggs. Once the eggs are produced, they are taken out from her ovaries. It is followed by the process when the man’s sperm are allowed to fertilize the eggs but outside the body. Soon the eggs start to grow and it is when they are inserted into the uterus of the woman for implantation and pregnancy takes place.

The Benefits

There are many advantages of IVF treatment. A few of them are mentioned below.

Solution for Unexplained Infertility

There are a few couples, who have infertility issues; however, the reasons remained undiagnosed. This kind of infertility is called unexplained infertility. IVF works out as a great solution for such couples. It lets the egg and sperm come in contact outside of the woman’s body and is followed by a gradual growth in a controlled and monitored environment.

Poor Sperm Counts

There are men who suffer from extremely low sperm count or defective sperm. They can resort to the IVF Technology with ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) and its benefits for conception. With this technology, the sperm is injected into the egg. Rest of the procedure remaining same as conventional IVF.

Missing Ovaries & Uterus

A woman, who lacks ovaries, can opt for the IVF treatment. Ideally, in such cases, another woman works as a donor and donates her eggs. Similarly, a woman without a uterus can also have a baby through IVF technology.  In such situations, the eggs must be harvested from her ovaries and they are then placed inside another woman’s uterus, who is called the gestational carrier or surrogate.

Helpful for Extreme Tubal Ailment

There are some women who suffer from severely damaged fallopian tubes which are caused either by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or due to extremely intra-abdominal infections. Through IVF technology, the tubes are bypassed and let the conception takes place outside the body. The fertilized eggs are then placed inside the uterus for a hopeful pregnancy.

Solution for Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy can spoil and even in a certain instance can destroy the eggs within the ovary. Women, undergoing the chemotherapy can opt for the IVF treatment to bear children. Before taking the chemo treatment, such women patients can choose to have eggs frozen, and saved that can be used for future conception, once the chemotherapy is over.

Conception Answer for the Aged Women

For women after 40’s, the chances of getting pregnant turn remote. However, the IVF technology works out as an answer to their desire to become a mother even after 40.  In this case, the donated eggs preferably from another younger woman have to be used.

Controlled Conception or Social freezing

IVF technology allows the couple to have a control over the timing of conception. These days, most of the couples are working professionals and their career tops their priority. Similarly, there are a few who might some kind of difficult life situation impacting the time when they can afford to have a baby comfortably. IVF technology allows them the control such situation. For the future use, eggs or embryos can be cryopreserved. The couple can select when they want the pregnancy or like to have their baby born.

Enhances Conception Probabilities

Among all the assisted reproductive treatment options, the IVF with PGS boasts the highest success record. If required to augment a woman’s probability of fertilization, a healthy pregnancy and childbirth, multiple cycles can be used.

Reduces Chances Of Miscarriage

One of the prime reasons behind a miscarriage is a genetic abnormality. Due to it, the body terminates the pregnancy naturally. Through the usage of PGD to know the genetic viability of an embryo much in advance, mothers can be assured of high chances of healthy conception and carry the baby full-term.

Enhances Probabilities Of Healthier Baby

To ensure that the baby to be born is going to be a healthy one, the genetic screening works as an effective new technology. By using genetic screening – called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) or preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), one can be assured that the embryos used for IVF are without identified genetic markers. These can be associated with serious medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, sickle cell anemia and Tay Sachs disease.

IVF is For Everyone

With so many benefits, IVF technology appears as one-stop-solution for all those who have limitations to conceive a baby, yet wish to be parent.
